Actions on the day at Blenheim

The Prinz Wilhelm Infantry Regiment formed part of the second line of Cutt’s assault column on the village of Blenheim. Although the village was never taken by outright assault the ferocity of the attack from the allies kept the French bottled up in Blenheim and allowed Marborough to break through the centre. In fact such was the ferocity that the French commander, the Maquis de Clerambault, poured more and more men into the village and that seriously weakened the French centre.

The Prinz Wilhelm regiment served in Major General Wilkes Brigade (I’ve also seen his name written as Wilken).

Uniform Details

These are quite easy to paint as the coat and lining are both blue. The trousers are red.

The hat is lined with white lace and the buttons are gold.

Actions on the day at Blenheim

The Welch Regiment of Fusiliers were part of the first line of Cutt’s column that was ordered to take the village of Blenheim. It’s probably more accurate to say that Marlborough ordered them to keep the troops around Blenheim occupied so that they could not interfere with his push in the center when he was ready to make the decisive blow against Tallard.

They were in Brigadier General Archibald Rowe brigade along with the units of Rowe,  Marlborough, Howe and North & Grey.

The Welch Regiment of Fusiliers actually earned their title as the Royal Welch Fusiliers because of they actions during the War of the Spanish Succession.

Uniform Details

The uniform details for this regiment gave me quite a headache and in the end I have gone with a personal guess!

Here’s my research.

It appears that they originally had blue coats with white facings. This is how Grant lists them in his wonderful book “The Armies and Uniforms of Marlborough’s Wars Vol 1″.

This uniform is confirmed for their battles in 1694 under Richard Ingoldsby at Namur when the unit was known as Herberts regiment of foot.

However I also read that in 1702 they were renamed to the Welch Fusiliers and apparently issued with red coats. So clearly I feel for Blenheim I should give them red coats.

Unfortunately I have yet to find any detailed descriptions of their uniforms so I do not know what colour the facings were. I have decided to show them blue as maybe that would be what they would have been given considering their earlier coats were mainly blue.

So, red coat with blue linings it is.

The Schopping Regiment serve in the center of the allied army under the overall command of Marlborough’s brother, Charles Churchill.

They were in Lt. General Ingoldsby brigade on the extreme left of the allied central position and just to the right of Cutt’s column.

Uniform Details

Blue coat with white cuffs and lining.  There was no hat lace. The buttons were yellow (I used gold on the officers).  The waistcoat was white. The neckcloth was white (although I’ve also seen it referred to as red). The breeches were grey. I painted the drummer in the same colours.

The Greder Allemand Regiment were part of the first line of defence around Blindheim. There were in fact two battalions from the Greder Allemand regiment and both were stationed together in this frost line of defence alonside 3 battalions from the Navarre regiment.

The Grand Allemand were part of Marquis de Clerambault section on the French Right Wing

I was determined to paint these as they are a welcome break from the masses of grey coats in the French army!

I wasn’t able to find any specific details about the drummers uniform so I went with reverse facings. When in doubt be colourful!

Uniform Details

Blue coat with yellow cuffs and lining.  The hat lace was white. Buttons silver.  The neckcloth was white. Red Breeches.

Actions on the day at Blenheim

The Fynske Regiment was one of the Danish regiments present at Blenheim. They  served under Lieutenant General Scholten in the extreme right of the allied line.

The Fynske were deployed in the second line of Scholten’s two lines of foot.

As with all of my Danish troops I decided to paint them charging with bayonets since they were know as good shock troops. Dixons miniatures do some lovely models for this. You can almost see them move as they lunge forward with their bayonets presented to the enemy.

Uniform Details

Grey coat with green cuffs and lining.  The hat lace was gold although I’ve painted the buttons silver.  The neckcloth was white and they had red collars.

Their were two battalions of Prince George Regiment of Foot at Blenheim. Both served under Lieutenant General Scholten in the extreme right of the allied line.

Scholten’s section was formed up into two lines and the 1st Battalion of Prince George formed up in the front line whilst the 2nd Battalion provided support in the second line.

Prince George’s regiment were Danish and as the Danes had a reputation as shock troops, I decided to paint them with bayonets charging in!

Uniform Details

Grey coat with orange cuffs.  Red hat lace and silver colured buttons.  Neckcloth was white and the waistcoat was grey. Orange Breeches.

Sir William Clifton’s Regiment of Foot were in the first line of Cutts’s assault column on the village of Blenheim.

They were one of five battalions in Brigadier Rowe’s Brigade. The other brigades present in that first line were Ingoldsby, Marlborough, North & Grey and Rowe.

History of Sir William Clifton’s Regiment

The regiment was raised originally in 1685 by Sir William Clifton. As was the custom then it was known by the name of its current Colonel. At the time of the Battle of Blenheim, this was Lieutenant General Emmanuel Scrope Howe which is why the regiment is quite often referred to as Howe’s regiment.

They were much later to be known as the 15th foot and then 15th (The Yorkshire East Riding) Regiment of Foot. Further name changes and amalgamations led them to be finally known as The Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire.

During the War of the Spanish Succession this regiment saw action at Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudenarde and Malplaquet.

Uniform Details

Red coat lined yellow. White hat lace. White Breeches.

There are some differing descriptions of this uniform. I’ve also seen it described as lined in red with yellow breeches.

Webb’s regiment were part of the allied center and formed part of Major General Webb’s own brigade. This brigade itself was part of a larger force commanded by Lt. General Lord Orkney.

This force deployed as Marlboroughs reserve as a 4th line behind the cavalry of the Erbroinz of Hesse-Kassel.

Uniform Details


 Red coat lined yellow. Yellow hat lace.  As per the norm for the British army, the musicians had reverse coloured uniforms so they were yellow with red lining.
